"Second Chance Dreamer"

The Art Club members helped design and paint this unicorn for the Gallopalooza, Louisville’s Sidewalk Derby. David Burks, a board member, was so taken with how the students wanted to keep this horse that he bought and donated her to Maryhurst. She is now deemed the school’s mascot, “Second Chance Dreamer,” While painting her, one of her inspired student creators wrote a feature article that was published in several magazines and newsletters citywide and continues to be used in advertisement for Maryhurst.

Fred Wiche Award

"Garden of Hope"

Maryhurst School received the 2006 Brightside "Fred Wiche Award" for a plan submitted for an outdoor classroom called, "Garden of Hope." Teachers will utilize the classroom throughout the year in all content areas. Students helped design the garden plot and implemented their plans with help from a local company, "Liquid Landscapes". Students learned "real world" skills through all aspects of the award-winning projects.

A dedication was held on August 14, 2007 to celebrate this achievement. Students, teachers and members of Brightside were in attendance.

It is anticipated that teachers and students will use this outdoor "Garden of Hope" for many years as a place for quiet reflection and study.

Maryhurst School has had an added award with a special surprise partnership of Fred Wiche's daughter Jeneen Wiche. During the times she spent at the dedication with our girls Jeneen seems to have fallen in love with them as they had with her and invited us out to her Swallow Rail Farm for an environmental day. She cooked from her garden, all natural products, it was heaven and Jeneen is a fantastic host. We were there in October 2007, and will be going back July 17, 2008 after two days of Food Literacy workshops at Oxmoor, a nice follow up to learning about the lost art of farming to the final product. Jeneen instructs the girls on farming vegetables and flowers. Students take pictures and interviews Ms. Wiche for the transactive writings they will have to do once back at school.

"Bring It On Girlz"

Language Arts classes have produced two editions of a teen magazine entitled “Bring It On Girlz” this past school year. Students wrote personal memoirs on a variety of topics such as “ My First Love”, “Getting Rid of My Fear of Heights” and an advice format entitled “Believe Me Please”, and other stories that are of most interest to a teen audience. This writing encouraged students to discover ways to write in an authentic manner to a real audience. Ms. Pam Miller, teacher, directed the project and enlisted the help of a local printing company to produce the magazine, making the work even more professional in appearance. Enough copies were printed so that every student and staff member were able to enjoy the work. The cover design of the second edition featured a sample of a decorated mask that students created to introduce individual stories.

ZOO TEEN SAFARI :

Approximately sixteen students took a week-long safari to the Louisville Zoo where they were able to see first hand how a zoo is managed. Students learned how much food it takes to feed six elephants per day as well as what kinds of foods giraffes really like to munch on. The new gorilla exhibit, which was just opened in the spring of 2002, was the most popular exhibit as our students were able to visit before the zoo actually opened to the public to get a closer look at these creatures.

"Survivors"

The "Survivors" magazine is a teen publication and part of the school's enrichment program. Students learn photography skills such as still life, animal portraits and candid shots of people which are included in the articles. Writings are contributed from all content areas and illustrations are provided by the art enrichment program.

Students use technology in all forms, such as, computers, digital cameras, layout and design techniques as shown in the picture of students working in the classroom. The enrichment program instructs teens about real-world applications and about the many career opportunities in photojournalism, journalism, painting, illustration, and design.

Their theme song, "We Are the Survivors”, consistent with the overall tone of the magazine was written by the chief editor.

We Are the Survivors!

We have hearts of warriors
We become strong within and save ourselves.
We follow paths that are not simple, never to give in.
We rise up out of the fires of failure.
We don't believe in self pity.
WE are held by GENTLE HANDS while we develop.
We Are the Survivors!
