Student Work

The following is one of many poems our students write. Poetry provides an educational as well as therapeutic activity for students. This poem was written by a student as a tribute to one of our teachers at Louisville Day Treatment.

Coincidence

Was it by coincidence,
Or was their need to know?
Did we meet by accident,
Was it the path to go?

Either does not matter,
We have learned so very much.
Time has made expansion,
Through the basis that we touch.

I hope you’ve learned as much as I have,
And I’m sure that this is true.
No one can ever break the friendship,
That was built between me and you.

You have taught me so very much,
And now this knowledge I explore.
My mind only becomes greater,
As I walk out them double doors.

This is no time for grieving,
Because we’ll always know,
That we have both made someone,
Now let’s watch his knowledge grow.

During the spring semester fo 2005, Louisville Day Treatment raised $1000 for UNICEF to distribute to the Tsunami Relief Effort. The Central Resion of the Department of Juvenile Justice recognized Louisville Day Treatment for its Charity and presented the program with a beautiful plaque.

Students at Louisville Day Treatment learn from doing a variety of projects.

Ms. Gibson’s math students test the strength of the bridges they made.

Cynthia Cooke, professional artist and cartographer, worked with students on a unit called Faces, Places, and Inner Spaces. Students traveled the world and experienced different cultures through Ms. Cooke’s presentations.

Students made a world map as part of the Faces, Places, and Inner Spaces project.

A variety of programs and services are offered to youth ages 12-18. Students have the opportunity to participate in group and individual therapy, a Title I Reading Program, a GED preparatory program, computer lab, health and physical education, in-depth vocational assessments, on-going service learning projects, and a high school diploma curriculum for regular and special education students.
Some students qualify for the Extended Day Program. This program targets the serious offender between the ages of 13-18 who requires intensive supervision and aftercare services. The primary mission of this program is to provide a structured environment extending beyond the regular school day until 7:00 in the evening. These students have the opportunity to participate in the programs at the Jefferson Community Technical College three days a week.

In the spring of 2000, Louisville Day Treatment was selected to receive a grant from the City of Louisville, Office of Youth Development, Youth as Resources, to implement a service learning project in vermicomposting. This on-going recycling project uses worms to accelerate the composting cycle. Youth bury leftover food from lunch in the compost bin. Teachers use this as a springboard for studying the energy flow and interrelationship of organisms in the ecosystem.

Louisville Day Treatment’s curriculum is enhanced each year by Junior Achievement, the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, field trips, the Meadowview Nursing Home Project, and the annual statewide Day Treatment Basketball Tournament. These activities and programs, combined with a caring, professional staff, offer students a new opportunity for growth and change.

Ms. Gibson and Ms. Fabing worked with their students to make and successfully launch a hot air balloon.

In a gesture of appreciation, Louisville Day Treatment students and staff donated baskets of food to the Lyndon Fire Department and made a contribution to their favorite charity on September 11, 2002.
