Student Work

Student Poetry

Writing poetry is one of the activities that is very successful at Ten Broeck-KMI. Poetry is an especially appropriate medium for troubled students because it provides students with a forum to explore and discuss their feelings and it allows the students to demonstrate their creative abilities. The students take great pride in their poems, and most of the students take their finished work home with them when they leave the hospital.

Technology in the Classroom

Ten-Broeck KMI takes advantage of state of the art technology such as tablet PC's, power point presentations, and video projection systems. Mr. Justin is shown here conducting a math warm up on his tablet PC.

Humanities

Humanities is one of the courses offered at Ten-Broeck KMI. After reading about the life and work of Amadeo Modigliani who emphasized triangular composition, and distorted, elongated figures, a Ten-Broeck student emulated this technique in a portrait of his own.

Integrated Science

Ten-Broeck KMI is participating in active physics as part of the G.E. initiative for math and science. Ms. Karen is conducting the active physics program. This program is a combination of physics and environmental science that emphasizes the inquiry method. At the end of each unit, there are performance assessments (chapter challenges) that allow students to apply the principles they have learned.

As part of the state of Kentucky's emphasis on accountability, students at Ten-Broeck KMI are given Star Reading and Math assessments. This test gives the teachers a benchmark for where each student is in reading and math. The test delineates specific strengths and weaknesses so that appropriate instruction can be tailored to meet each student's individual needs.

Star Reading and Math

Ramp Up

Ten-Broeck KMI participates in the Ramp Up literacy program. Ramp Up offers a different pedagogy, a rigorous curriculum, and sixty minute classes designed to help striving readers meet the same high standaards that are emphasized for every student in the Jefferson County School System.

Student Activities

Movie Essay

The movie essay activity engages students in watching, listening, discussing, writing, conferencing, editing, and presenting oral reports. The movie is selected to reflect diverse themes and elaborate on core content learning. The writing prompt is constructed to assist students to integrate students’ prior knowledge with new learning and to give students opportunities to practice the writing process and orally present their work to a group. Over time, our students exhibit increased confidence in their abilities to write on demand and participate in public speaking

Student Library

In order to encourage interest in literature, Ten Broeck KMI has developed a library for the use of its students. The library is managed by a part time librarian, and provides the students with an array of hundreds of hard back books , paperback books, magazines as well as computer research tools. The library is especially beneficial to RCU (students who attend the residential long term program) because it gives a constructive way to use their non-structured time in the hospital.
