Montessori Magnet Program

In 2011, Westport became home to the only public, middle-level Montessori Program in the district. Montessori education supports the natural growth of children by helping them develop creativity, problem-solving, critical-thinking, and time-management skills as well as fostering contributions to society and the environment. Students in the Montessori program learn to work independently and in groups; they learn to research and synthesize information; and they explore their intellectual interests and aesthetic pursuits.

To enroll in the program, students must apply and be accepted. The criteria considered for admission are good grades, teacher recommendations, good attendance and behavior, and a written essay. The application process for acceptance to this magnet program for incoming sixth graders begins in October 2011, following the Showcase of Schools.

SpringBoard

Westport students use SpringBoard as our Language Arts curriculum. This program, developed by the College Board, provides students the rigor and skills they need to be prepared for Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school and in college-level work. Visual and Performing Arts

We are proud to offer band, orchestra, chorus, visual art, and drama to our students. They have multiple opportunities throughout the year to perform for their peers, families, and the community, as well as compete in local and state contests.

World Language

Westport Middle Schools offers Japanese and Spanish language instruction with the potential to earn high school credit for two years of middle school study.

Technology

Students have multiple opportunities to learn about, communicate with, and get hands-on experience with different kinds of technology. We have four full computer labs plus additional computers available in the library. In related arts technology courses, students learn about word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, web design, and desktop publishing. Students also can take part in Robotics classes. Our Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) goes to the state competition in Lexington each year. Our students also produce broadcasts, podcasts, blogs, and websites.
