History
On October 30, 1961, a dedication ceremony was held for the opening of the new Westport Road High School. The school sat on 39.72 acres purchased for $119,892. The first principal was Vito Brucchieri, and the boys' counselor was Pat Crawford, who went on to become the first principal of Ballard High School.
At one time, there was a metal sculpture of the school's mascot, a warhawk, hanging on the front of the gymnasium. The sculpture was designed by the famous Louisville artist Barney Bright, who also created the Louisville Clock and other sculptures downtown and in Cave Hill Cemetery.
The last graduating class of the high school was in 1981, and in the 1981-82 school year, Westport Middle School opened.
