NEA's Read Across America

will celebrate its 10th anniversary on March 2

the birthday of Dr. Seuss and the 50th anniversary of The Cat in the Hat

Friday, March 2, I would like to have a "Read In" for the entire school. I have chosen 3 books from the Bluford Series, high interest books for teenagers. The books will be distributed to each teacher (one book per teacher) in each grade level. This is a progressive read aloud activity.

One title for each grade level. The book averages 120 pages each. The teachers will progressively read to each class. Four blocks of reading 30 pages should finish the book. Literacy and related arts will not be part of the block reading.

The teachers will read (about 30 pages) to the class in the first block, then read the next 30 pages to the next block and so on until the book is read.

All the teachers on the team will read the same pages at the same time but to a different block of students.

6th grade - Secrets in the Shadow by Anne Schraff

7th grade - Lost and Found by Anne Schraff

8th grade - A Matter of Trust by Anne Schraff

The Bluford Series is a collection of thirteen young adult novels that focus on the lives of a group of high school students and their families. The series draws its name from the school that many of the characters attend: Bluford High, named after Guion "Guy" Bluford, America's first black astronaut.

Set in contemporary urban America, each novel addresses complex topics relevant to the lives of today's students: family, friendship, trust, isolation, violence, and peer pressure, to name a few.

In addition, the books feature male and female characters and include elements from many literary genres, such as mystery, suspense, romance, and a touch of the supernatural. In other words, the Bluford Series offers something for almost every reader.

Finally, the books are short (less than 200 pages) and written in a highly readable style. Reviewed in a national reading journal and praised by students and teachers nationwide, the Bluford Series appeals to readers of all ages.

2. The City of Ember, by Jeanne DuPrau. In the year 241, twelve-year-old Lina trades jobs on Assignment Day to be a Messenger to run to new places in her decaying but beloved city, perhaps even to glimpse Unknown Regions. Lina must decipher a cryptic document to save her city.

3. Eragon, by Christopher Paolini. A boy and a young dragon must navigate a bewildering world of dark powers.

4. Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen. Roy, who is new to his small Florida community, becomes involved in another boy's attempt to save a colony of burrowing owls from a proposed construction site.
