High School began operation in
January, 1986, as an open-entry/open-exit program. Its mission was to provide an
opportunity for students to obtain a high school diploma by attending class on
a flexible schedule. The target population was: 16-20 year olds who wished to
transfer from their present high school, young adults 16-20 years of age who
had dropped out of school, and adults 21 years of age or older. Since its
inception, JCHS has grown so that it now serves over 3000 students and has over
400 graduates annually.
Curriculum Source for Alternative Programs
High School has developed a
curriculum that is individualized, self-paced and teacher-designed. As of
September 2003, the JCHS program and/or curriculum materials have been used in
300 school district/agencies in 27 states.
Independent Study Through Correspondence
In 1996, JCHS expanded its alternative educational opportunities when it
began operating the Independent Study office for the district. This program
provides opportunities for students to meet their needs through independent
study work by correspondence.
