Independent Study Program

The Independent Study program operated by Jefferson County High School provides opportunities for students at all Jefferson County high schools to meet their educational needs through independent work by correspondence. Students may enroll in Independent Study courses in order to eliminate deficiencies on high school transcripts and to earn additional credits toward graduation, or for enrichment purposes.

Students must receive approval from their counselor in order to enroll in an Independent Study course. The Independent Study program offers over sixty 1/2 credit courses. The tuition for each 1/2 credit course is $75 plus the cost of the textbook. Students complete unit assignments from a workbook and mail each completed unit to the Independent Study office. When all work has been completed, students make an appointment to take the final examination. Students must receive a passing grade on the final examination in order to receive credit for the course. The final examination counts one-fourth of the final grade. Homework assignments count three-fourths.
