2012 Eastern Eagles (32 wins – 8 losses)

2012 proved to be another big year for Eastern Baseball as the Eagles won 30 games for the eighth straight season and won another 28th district championship. Eastern was ranked #2 in the final coaches poll.

Eastern started out the season by winning seven of its first eight games against top quality teams such as Butler, DeSales, North Oldham (8thregion champ) and Glen Ellyn, IL. The Eagles then beat #22 Woodford County 6-4 as the Yellowjackets went on to win the state championship. Eastern continued its winning ways going into spring break by beating Jeffersonville, IN, #24 Bullitt East and Manual and were 12-2 heading to Florida.

Against some stiff competition in Florida and Alabama, the Eagles went 4-3 on their spring break trip and beat such quality teams as Niceville, FL and Marianna, FL. Eastern came back to Kentucky and won six games in a row and all three of its district games to clinch the #1 seed in the 28thdistrict. Robert Strader threw a no-hitter against district rival Jeffersontown while also defeating top 20 Collins High School.

Two big wins came in the Louisville Invitational Tournament as Eastern rolled 12-3 over #11 West Jessamine with Mikey Baker picking up the win and 6-0 over 5thranked and defending state champion Central Hardin as Jonah Philley tossed a two-hitter. The Eagles tough scheduled continued, as well as its winning ways after dropping a heartbreaker to #1 Lexington Catholic. The Eagles then recovered to beat #22 Christian Academy, #14 Ballard and then #2 and eventual regional champion St. X. The next weekend, Eastern beat 10th ranked Lafayette and capped of the regular season with a 4-0 win over #7 Male.
In the post season, Eastern beat top 25 Christian Academy in the first round of the district as Jonah Philley tossed a shutout for his 11th win of the season. Robert Strader then disposed of KCD in the district finals as the Eagles won their 6thdistrict championship since 2005.

In the regional tournament, Eastern rolled over Fern Creek 14-4 in the first round before dropping an 8-0 decision to the Male Bulldogs in the semi-finals.

Head coach John Morris completed his 11th year as the Eagles head coach and has a overall coaching record of 338-89 (.792 winning pct.). It was Eastern’s 11th straight regional tournament appearance and their sixth district title,

Eastern was led offensively during the season by Michael Davis with a .431 batting average and .a 553 on base percentage. The senior centerfield and pitcher also led the team in runs (52), hits (53), singles (36), triples (5), home runs (3) and walks (28). Davis also had 26 RBI in the leadoff spot. Fellow senior teammate and third baseman John Gastinger also had a great year at the plate with a .403 average, 48 hits, 17 doubles (team high), 38 RBI, 10 HBP and a .503 on base percentage. Mikey Baker led the team in stolen bases with 18.

On the mound, University of Louisville signee Jonah Philley was 11-1 with four complete games and three shutouts. Philley beat such quality teams as defending state champion #5 Central Hardin, Marianna, FL, Jeffersonville, IN, LaRue County, Collins, #14 Ballard, #10 Lafayette, #7 Male, DeSales and #24 Christian Academy. The senior ace also struck out 80 in 70 innings pitched. Fellow U of L signee Robert Strader had eight wins and struck out a team high 90 batters in 60 2/3 innings pitched. Strader beat such quality teams as #2 St. X, Butler, #24 Bullitt East, Niceville, FL, Jeffersontown (no-hitter) and KCD. Michael Davis had four wins (North Oldham and Manual) while Kyle Schuette had three wins (Woodford County) for the Eagles.
Eastern is sending three players to college to play baseball next year including Jonah Philley and Robert Strader (University of Louisville) and Mikey Baker (Pikeville University).
