Eastern Cross Country continues to develop into one of the state’s premier programs. Individually the team garnered several awards throughout the season. The women placed 3 runners on the all-state team with Seniors Bernadette Catron, Tori Mayfield, and Anna Schreiner all claiming the honor. Sophomore Austin Zachary also garnered the recognition on the men’s side.
For the 2010 campaign the men’s team returns 6 of the top 7 runners from the 10th place team and looks to improve on last year’s finish. The ladies lost 4 very valuable seniors but will fight to stay among the state’s elite teams as well.
After guiding the women’s program as head coach for the last 4 years, Eastern alum Mike Horan has assumed the same role with the men’s team as well. Assisted by David Letendre and Eastern alum Adam Bachmann, he is looking to challenge the traditional powers in the state, hoping to continue to build on the success of the last decade.
The cross country team is unique at Eastern in its regard for participation and involvement. The team has adopted a non-cut policy that welcomes athletes with no regard for previous participation or ability. The only requirement for participation is a interest in getting better.
The team also hosts one of the top meets in Kentucky. The Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic is a college, high school, and middle school meet that is co-sponsored with the Greater Louisville Sports Commission. The meet is held at the storied Cross Country course at Tom Sawyer Park on October 2nd, 2010.
