Athletics
Doss takes pride in its commitment to its athletic programs. Equity in our athletic programs is our primary focus. BASEBALLDragon Baseball has long been a successful training ground for young ball players. Doss has won 16 district championships, including 7 in a row from 2001-2007. It also has one of the finest facilities in the District and has developed a working relationship with Beechmont Little League. BASKETBALLThe boys’ basketball team has been in the upper echelon of Jefferson County teams since its inception. With two state runner-up titles, four Region 6 trophies, and 12 district titles, the Dragons are proven in their accomplishments. In addition to a strenuous regular and post-season schedule, the team participates in the A. A. U. Program. The YMCA-sponsored Little League also is held in Doss’ three large gyms. In 1997, the Dragons began a series of summer camps aimed at helping pre-high school youngsters sharpen their basketball skills. Former University of Kentucky star Derek Anderson is a proud Doss graduate. The Lady Dragons have a strong hoops tradition. They were the State Runner-up in 1987, have one Region 6 title and boast 10 district championships. Doss' Kim Pehlke was Kentucky 's Miss Basketball in 1988 and went on to a successful career at Western Kentucky University . CHEERLEADINGThe Doss Cheerleading squad has received national recognition in the last several years qualifying and attending national competitions in Orlando, Florida. The Doss squad attends many competitions throughout the year and also takes part in regular gymnastics classes. Doss also hosts a cheer competition annually and last year the National Champion University of Louisville Cheer squad participated in the Doss competition. DANCE TEAMThe Doss Dance Team has been very successful in past years. In 1993, Doss won the state competition in Dance. Each year, the Dance team participates in numerous competitions as well as attending summer camp to polish skills. The Dance team has been reinvented in 2001 and is looking forward to rising back to the top. FOOTBALLThe Doss Football team has a long-standing football tradition. Doss boasts two Regional Runner-up trophies, the latest in 1996. Doss has won several district championships and was the District Runner-up in 2007. The Dragons play their home games on the Bermuda turf at Hayward Shartzer Stadium. Doss plays a ten-game schedule and has produced several NCAA Division I players. Isaac Sowells, a Doss and Indiana University alumni, is currently playing with the National Football League's Cleveland Browns. GOLFThe Doss golf team started its winning tradition very early winning the State Championship in 1975 and 1976. SOCCERThe Doss boys and girls soccer teams play a 15-game fall schedule and have played host to the District Tournament twice. This program has improved steadily in recent years with the Dragons advancing to the Regional Tournament. The girl’s soccer team was district champions in their first year. Doss has had one All-State soccer selection and several All-Region selections and maintains one of only a handful of soccer programs in the southwestern part of Jefferson County. SOFTBALLThe Doss Softball team plays a 20-game junior varsity and varsity schedule in the spring. The facility has undergone renovations over the past five years and continues to improve. The team boasts four district titles. TENNISDoss has three state-of-the-arts tennis courts available for play. Doss has had one All-State tennis player, Rex Ecarma, who is the current University of Louisville men’s tennis coach. The Dragons have won five regional boys titles, three regional girls titles, while qualifying numerous players for state competition. TRACK/CROSS COUNTRYDoss also offers track and field and cross country teams. These teams compete in several Invitational meets along with several dual matches. Doss’ boys and girls track teams have been very competitive in the Regionals and several have competed on the state level. VOLLEYBALLThe Doss volleyball team works on developing the skills of young, novice players. It plays a 15-game junior varsity and varsity schedule each fall. The team has a place for every level of player from beginner to advance. WRESTLINGThe Doss wrestling team is available to young people of all skill levels. It competes in 12 to 15 matches during the winter months, including several weekend tournaments. Doss hosts district and regional tournaments and has had five State Champions. |
