Geographic Information System

Geographic Information System (GIS) is technology that allows a user to view and analyze the geographical information of a region. With GIS, users are able to identify where to place key structures in order to gain the most significant economic growth. GIS can also be used for digitally planning development in a location before construction begins, or to create disaster management and preparation information.

At Central High School, GIS is an elective that can be taken during a student's junior or senior year. The two-semester (one full year) program mainly focuses on the Jefferson County area. Students in the GIS program learn the basic skills on how to use and analyze GIS related materials. In addition, the student discovers what makes GIS important to our communities.
