| The Eastern track and field program is building on a foundation of excellence that reaches back into a rich history. The bright history includes ten state championships, ten state runner up titles, and twenty-two regional championships.
The women’s track and field team won the 2006 state championship. This is the first state championship since 1998 and is a significant step back to prominence.
The rich history also includes some very special individual champions. The Eastern track program boasts many NCAA scholarship recipients (in track as well as other sports). We are proud of NCAA All-Americans, an Olympic Trials competitor, state record holders, and a National Coach of the Year (Jim Holman). We are also proud of Eastern track alumni who have competed in the NFL and WNBA.
The Eastern coaching staff is made up of Coach McCoy, Coach Horan, Coach Smith, Coach Jackson, and Coach Bachmann. Coach McCoy is the head Men’s Coach and works with sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers. Coach Horan is the head women’s coach and works primarily with the distance runners. Coach Smith assists with sprinters and relays. Coach Jackson works with field event athletes, particularly the pole vaulters. Coach Bachmann works with distance runners and field event athletes.
The Eastern Track program is proud of its great history, and the coaching staff looks at this team as an extension of that successful past. The team welcomes all interested athletes, whether all-state performers or inexperienced rookies. The Eastern Track program practices a no cut policy. All athletes are encouraged to join the team.
A successful track and field program requires many different types of athletes. The sprint corps is made up of athletes competing in the 100m, 200m, and 400m, as well as 300m and 110/100m hurdles. The athletes competing in these events are fast and explosive. Distance running events include the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. These athletes combine great speed with great endurance. The strong and explosive throws group throws the shot put and discus. These events require some of the strongest folks in the building, along with great technique. The jumpers combine great speed and explosiveness in the long jump, high jump, and triple jump.
