Who Was Isaac Shelby?

Isaac Shelby was the first Governor of Kentucky. That is the reason we have so many places with Shelby in them, from Shelby Street to Shelbyville to Shelby Elementary.

This is a timeline of dates in the life of Isaac Shelby:

 1750 Born in Washington County
(now Frederick County) Maryland
 1773 Moved to the Holston River country in what is now Eastern Tennessee 
 1776 Moved to Kentucky 
1776 Led troops in the Revolutionary War
1780 elected to Virginia legislature
(what is now Kentucky was then a part of Virginia)
1782 married Susannah Hart
1792 Kentucky becomes a state
1792 Elected Kentucky's first Governor, one term
1812 Led troops in the War of 1812
1812 Elected Governor for a second term
1816 Left office
1826 died
