SHELBY ELEMENTARY TRADITIONAL MAGNET PROGRAM 2009-2010

Shelby Elementary School will have a traditional magnet program beginning in 2009-2010. Traditional magnet programs emphasize basic skills in a structured, disciplined learning environment that requires uniforms, daily homework, and meaningful parent involvement. Students who want to take advantage of Shelby's traditional magnet program will have to complete an application and be admitted through a random draw lottery process. Students in the Shelby traditional magnet program will be part of the traditional education feeder pattern to Barret Traditional, Jefferson County Traditional, and Johnson Traditional Middle Schools.

Highlights of the Shelby Elementary Tradition Magnet Program:

* Focus on teaching and learning at grade level in a highly structured classroom environment

* Emphasize dress codes and daily homework

* Promote courtesy, patriotism, morality, and respect for others

* Expect parents to monitor their child's schoolwork and to support academic and extracurricular activities

* Students must apply and be admitted through the random draw lottery process.

* Students in the Shelby traditional program will have the opportunity to go to a traditional middle school.

* Bus transportation will be provided for most district students accepted in the Shelby traditional program regardless of where the students live.
