All second graders at Bowen participate in the District's Starfish program. Sponsored jointly by Louisville Metro Government and Jefferson County Public Schools, Starfish provides swimming instruction to all second grade students enrolled in JCPS. In late September and early October, each Bowen second grade class had four, fourty-five minute sessions at the Northeast Family Y where they learn water safety and swimming basics.

Parent Karrie Roy summed up the Starfish expereince this way:
The Starfish program is an incredible opportunity for our children. The instructors are dedicated and give each child individual attention based on their abilities. They feel comfortable and confident on what is asked of them. The program is a complete success!
