Teacher's Note:
Many parents ask, “Why go on a field trip to the Kentucky State Fair?” I ask, “Why not?” The Kentucky State Fair is about more than great concerts, good food and thrilling rides. The event also features interactive activities for children and educational exhibits offering valuable knowledge on a variety of topics.

Each year the South Wing hosts the Kaleidoscope Discovery Zone, a 20,000 square foot exhibit just for kids! This year’s theme was, The Mosaic of Life, Why Biodiversity is Key to Our Survival on Earth. Here students compared natural habitats in Kentucky and Africa, learned mapping skills and had the opportunity to touch reptiles and amphibians. This website describes this Educational Exhibit: http://www.kystatefair.org/special_exhibits/educational_exhibit/index.html

Students filled bags with “free” stuff as they visited the many booths in each area. At the Health Horizons booths they learned how to read food labels and understand the nutritional content of many of the foods they eat (really -- candy bars have too much sugar?).

The Kentucky Historical Society booth was the place to learn about the history of Kentucky. While visiting there, a group of students even got to meet Governor Ernie Fletcher!

Along with the educational exhibits, there is a great deal of fun for the students as well. The Kidz Biz stage has daily entertainment from comedians, magicians, musicians and illusionists. The students are learning while having fun.
