Teacher's Notes:
In third grade the main social studies focus is on community at the local level. We learn about our local government, cultures, societies, geography (maps, landforms, etc.) and economics. My students choose a downtown Louisville building to become an “expert” in. They build a model, write a paper giving important facts about their building and give an oral presentation. We then place our “community” on a large scale map on the classroom floor and develop a 3-D sense of what our downtown looks like. Students develop knowledge in spatial relationships, math & scale, writing an article, map skills, and speech skills after completion of their projects. - Ms. Ann Holloway
