| The East Community League for Basketball and Cheerleading (ECLBAC) is a community based organization sponsored by parents and PTAs of the 8 participating schools. It is governed by a board of directors whose members set policies and rules for play. One of at least four such leagues in the Jefferson County, the 2006-2007 season is Bowen's fourth year to participate. ECLBAC goals include:
teaching teamwork
encouraging physical activity and fitness
teaching beginning basketball skills
teaching beginning cheer/dance skills
reinforcing academic skills
(B or above required to participate)
Both basketball teams and cheerleading squads are coed with 15 members on each team. Students must be in the fourth or fifth grade. The season consists of 8 weeks followed by a 3 week tournament which includes a Showcase of Talent for cheerleaders on the final night of play. Coaches are parent volunteers while Officials, Security and the DJ who keeps things lively are paid for by the league. All games are played at the Westport Middle School Gym. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students
In the ECLBAC everyone plays! League rules require that each member of the team play one period of each game. There are four 8 minute quarters. In the final quarter, players may be mixed and substituted, as teams go for the win! During half-time, each cheerleading squad performs a featured cheer/dance routine. Teams and squad practice 2 times each week for 1 1/2 hours.
A unique part of half-time activity is the academic challenge. The 'Principal in Charge' for the night randomly selects 3 cheerleaders and 3 basketball players from each team who are quizzed on published academic questions. Each right answer earns the team 2 points. This is high stakes since each team has the possibility of adding 12 points to their score!
