Youth Performing Arts School

Theatre & Musical Theatre Departments

The goal of the Theatre Department at YPAS is to develop a quality product through an emphasis on the artistic process. The course of study furthers the disciplines of the theatrical arts and includes instruction in the physical, verbal, and structural elements of theatre. A carefully designed approach and course of study provide young student performers with the techniques they will need to freely express their creative energies. An actor’s instruments are his or her body and voice. In order to be creatively and technically adept, an actor must gain knowledge, freedom, and control of these instruments. The Theatre Program encompasses training; creative and imaginative exploration; and the history, literature, and production of the theatre.

Some graduates are now performing in Broadway shows, professional repertory companies, soap operas, films, broadcasts, children’s theatre, and commercials; some are even teaching at theatre institutes.

Musical Theatre

The four-year Musical Theatre major is designed to prepare those students who aspire to enter a university or conservatory program that emphasizes versatility in the multiple performance disciplines of dance, acting, and singing. During the course of their four years, students study with the faculty of the Dance, Theatre, and Vocal Departments in an integrated and sequenced curriculum (listed below). In Dance, they study Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Folk, and Theatre Dance with a strong emphasis on American Tap dance. In their Vocal classes, they develop their voices based on classical techniques of good solo singing and they participate in small and large vocal ensembles.

Their music studies also include basic keyboard technique, composition, and advanced music theory. In Theatre, they work on developing their total instrument (body, voice, mind, and heart) through the study of classical, contemporary, and period literature as well as classical and contemporary musical theatre material. In today’s competitive entertainment world, artists with wide-ranging performance skills are in high demand, and the Musical Theatre Program at YPAS is designed to meet the future career needs of students who are dreaming of entering this challenging field.
