St. Joseph Children’s Home

School Profile

St. Joseph Children’s Home is a licensed residential program for children ages 5 to 14. There are three on-campus classroom, highly supervised treatment foster care and a volunteer program called "family visitors" whereby residents are involved in normal family activities for weekends and holidays, in an approved family setting.

  • Population Served: Boys and girls, ages 5 to 14
  • Specific Characteristics: Students who are unable to function in a comprehensive classroom, may exhibit out-of-control behaviors or those who benefit from instruction in a small setting.
  • Maximum Enrollment:  40
  • Average Length of Stay: 2 years
  • The St. Joseph School follows the JCPS calendar and includes a summer program.

School Programs

St. Joseph Children’s Home school program functions as a transitional setting for students who are unable to attend regular Jefferson County Public Schools.  Educational goals for this program are as follows:

  • To assist students with educational, developmental and emotional problems.
  • To provide an opportunity to maintain, develop and/or remediate academic skills.
  • To provide a nurturing environment in which students can work independently and in small groups.
  • To develop appropriate school behaviors.
  • To prepare to transition into a regular school setting.

Referral Process

Approximately 98 percent of the residents is referred for placement by the Kentucky Cabinet for Families and Children. Private referrals and placements from Indiana are accommodated as openings allow.
