Youth Services Centers are designed to help remove barriers to student learning. Each Center assists students and families through programs, referrals to outside agencies and by partnering with groups within and outside of the school. Programs and services are determined by the needs of the population served, available resources, location and other local characteristics. The Centers work with families to improve students’ attendance, to decrease problems with behavior or suspensions, to offer academic support, to deal with mental/physical health issues and to offer parent support and assistance. All students and families are served regardless of income.
Frequently asked questions:

1. How can I receive information about uniforms, school supplies, referrals for financial assistance and other services?
These services vary according to zip code but you may call Fairdale's YSC Coordinator for specific information.

2. Where can I find information about physical and immunizations?
All incoming 9th graders must have immunizations. However, only high school students who plan to participate in school athletics need to have a physical. You can contact your YSC Coordinator, your Neighborhood Place, or health department if you need help obtaining health services.

3. Where can I go to get assistance for mental health issues (family, school, anger, alcohol or drug problems)?
Contact the YSC Coordinator to find out about specific counseling services available to your child. You may also call the Crisis and Information number – 589-1100. Mental Health emergencies may go to Kosair Children’s Emergency Room at 231 E. Chestnut St.

4. What can I do with my child when he/she refuses to go to school?
As the student’s parent/guardian you are responsible for getting your child to school. If your child misses nine (9) unexcused days of school he/she will be referred to Pupil Personnel and possibly court. This means he/she will be considered truant. If you think your child has school phobia or other issues you may want to contact a mental health professional or call your YSC Coordinator.

5. Where can I get additional academic support for my child, including information on CATS, graduation requirements, Exceptional Child education, English as Second Language, etc…?
Contact your school counselor or YSC Coordinator to find which services are available at Fairdale High. There are also services in your community (such as Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs, churches, Community Centers, Wesley House, private tutors, etc…)

6. How can I get help finding a job/college/GED for myself or my student?
Contact your YSC Coordinator. Mrs. Watkins may be able to connect you with resources in the community.

7. What can I do when my child needs insurance?
For those meeting financial criteria, K-Chip or Passport may be available. Adults without insurance may qualify for “Get CARE." Call 583-4690 for information, or contact the YSC Coordinator for assistance.

8. Are there summer programs, including middle to high transition, available for my child?
Most YSC Coordinators have information about summer programs prior to the end of the school year. Watch your school newsletter for more information. Services may vary according to zip code.

9. Are there parent programs to help me communicate and support my teen or pre-teen?
Contact your YSC Coordinator and watch for information in the newsletter.

10. How can I apply for FREE/reduced lunch and fee waiver?
You must apply for FREE/reduced lunch every year. Make sure the school has your correct address. The form will be mailed to your home during the summer for you to complete and return. If you need help with this, please contact the YSC Coordinator.
