JCPS High School Diploma Standards

STANDARDS: Reading, Math, Writing
In order to graduate and receive a high school diploma from Jefferson County Public Schools, a student must achieve each of the following:

  1. Complete the state-required 22 credits
  2. Score Apprentice or higher on the state Reading Assessment
  3. Score Apprentice or higher on the state Math Assessment
  4. Score Apprentice or higher on the Writing Portfolio as scored by JCPS staff.

RECOVERY: Reading and Math
Students who fail to score Apprentice or higher on the state reading or math tests must complete a set of district-designed "competency modules" through which each school will re-teach the content in smaller segments until the student reaches competency. These modules could be part of coursework, ESS, pullout sessions, online work, or summer work. Tenth grade students would have 2 years to complete the competency modules in reading and 11th grade students would have 1 year to complete the modules.

RECOVERY: Writing
At the end of the junior year, teachers will evaluate each student's performance level on pieces in his/her 11th grade writing folder. Within their senior English classes, students lacking skills and missing pieces of writing will receive more specific instruction, assistance, and conferencing.

ACCOMODATIONS
Special student populations who already use established, documented accommodations will continue to use them to demonstrate "competency" for the reading, math, and writing standards.

OUT OF DISTRICT ENROLLMENTS:
Students who miss the state reading and math assessments must meet the standard(s) through the competency modules. All students are accountable for the writing portfolio standard with one exception: seniors who have been in a Kentucky public school less than 100 days will be required to have a complete portfolio for graduation, but its score does not have to be apprentice or higher.

Writing portfolios - Students must present a portfolio that scores APPRENTICE or above prior to graduation. Students who do not present a portfolio scoring APPRENTICE or above will NOT be allowed to graduate with their class or participate in the graduation ceremony. Students who DO NOT present a portfolio with the minimum standard (APPRENTICE) prior to graduation date will be afforded assistance in the extended services program to complete their portfolio and the diploma will be obtained at that time.
