Debate Team

History

Debate Team has been a part of Central since 1998. In 2001, one student from Central went to the National Competition in Pittsburgh and received a full Debate Scholarship at the University of Louisville.

The type of style Central follows is the Lincoln-Douglass style debate (Central vs. another school). Students attend meetings, which take place once a week. During the meetings, students choose topics to do research on and practice debating among each other. Before a competition, participants meet more frequently for preparation. There are usually four local tournaments in Jefferson County. Then the regional is usually held at Western Kentucky University or University of Kentucky. Qualified Nationals will then compete in Pittsburgh.

This is an area Central students have much success in. You don't necessarily have to be in the Law Magnet to be a part of the Debate Team -- everyone is welcome to join. Benefits from being a part of this activity can result in scholarship offerings from top colleges in the nation.

Eligibility Requirements

Students who want to be a part of the Debate Team must have a "C" average or better. Competitions are usually held on Saturday mornings so students must be committed.
