Pre-Med

The Pre-Medical Science Magnet introduces students to the fields of pathology and diagnostics, with an emphasis on disease processes, through information and hands-on experiences. Students should maintain consistently good attendance and should have above-average skills in reading, mathematics, and science.

Grade Ten

During the sophomore year, students are introduced to lab safety and lab equipment and learn basic immunology, microbiology, radiology (X-ray), and medical terminology. Students are encouraged to consider education and career goals. Qualified students may job shadow in lab and X-ray.

Grade Eleven

The junior year curriculum includes an introduction to blood-sample collection, hematology (the study of blood), urinalysis, and pathology. Students also research education and career goals. When possible, health-care professionals are asked to serve as mentors for qualified students.

Grade Twelve

During the senior year, students continue their survey of medical topics, including cardiology and neurology. Topics covered in previous years are reviewed and updated, with an emphasis on current developments. Students begin final preparation for further education and have the opportunity to refine employment and career skills. Work experience in medical fields may be available for qualified students.
