Medical Office

The Medical Office Administration Magnet has an inclusive administrative health-career and business focus. Students explore various careers found in hospitals, medical offices, nursing homes, insurance companies, and businesses, while engaging in classroom and experiential learning strategies. The administrative health career is one of the fastest-growing careers in today's marketplace. Graduates from the Central High School Medical Office Administration Magnet are prepared to enter the job market or to pursue post-secondary training, with scholarships available.

Grade Ten

Sophomore students learn 350 medical terms and applications. An in-depth focus is on the administrator's role in promoting professionalism and confidentiality. In working with Microsoft Office 2000, students learn how to format various medical documents, using several computer features. Students focus on basic medical-office procedures. Shadowing opportunities are available at various medical facilities, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge on experiential learning. Medical dictation is also introduced, and guest speakers enhance the curriculum.

Students visit Sullivan University to experience Medical Office Administration college classes.

Grade Twelve

Senior students display their communication and office skills in the classroom, under the simulation of a medical office. The Medisoft Patient Accounting System is the simulation employed to increase skills in advanced medical-office patient accounting. Students with a 2.5 grade-point average and good attendance may participate in co-op jobs. The jobs utilize the knowledge and skills students have learned in the classroom. Students not participating in the co-op program complete a senior project related to medical topics each grading period. Former students in the program have worked at Jewish, University, and CARITAS hospitals; Orthopedic Associates; Kroger Pharmacy; Humana; several private insurance companies; and doctors' and business offices.
