- School Profile
Atherton High School offers the International Studies Program. This Optional Program includes students of all ability levels who express an interest in an extended study of language, international affairs, and international business. Six languages, including Chinese and Japanese, are offered. A variety of activities, such as conferences, forums, travel, and foreign exchange programs in various countries, extends learning beyond the classroom. The international focus of the school prepares all students for global citizenship. Atherton is the only Jefferson County Public School and one of only three schools in Kentucky offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. IB is an unique opportunity for JCPS students to participate in a world-recognized educational program. It is a two-year course of study for highly motivated and academically gifted juniors and seniors that leads to examinations for and IB Diploma. Students may earn up to a year’s credit or advanced standing at most prestigious colleges and universities. A student not taking the full program can earn a certificate for individual IB courses. In addition to a fine college-preparatory education at Advance and Honors levels, Atherton has a strong fine arts program which includes art, band, choral music, drama, and orchestra.
