One way the Bowen PTA supports school/parent communication is through the purchase of an emergency parent notification system - D.E.A.N. (Dynamic Emergency Alert Network). This system allows all members of the Bowen community to be instantly notified via text message, e-mail and or voice message of real-time situations as they are developing.

If you were a Bowen family last school year AND you registered for DEAN alerts AND your e-mail and phone numbers are the same, you do not need to do anything to receive notifications for the 2011-12 school year. You are still in the system.

If you were a Bowen family last school year AND you registered for DEAN alerts BUT your e-mail and/or phone numbers have changed, please go to http://www.deanalert.com, log in and update your account with your new numbers, etc. You are still in the system, you just need to tell it how to reach you in 2011-2012.

If you are new the Bowen community OR you did not register for D.E.A.N. last year, this Web page will answer questions about the system and give you instructions for registration.

This is a great service to our families! We will begin using the system September 1, 2011 for emergency messages and reminders, so make sure you get registered!

FAQs

When will you use the system?
There are three basic categories:

  • Emergency - For example if there were a chemical leak, gas leak or train derailment, you would receive a message detailing the situation. Follow-up messages could be sent with more detailed information as the situation develops.
  • Weather Notifications - Early dismissal because of weather and school closings.
  • Reminders and General Information - Family fun nights, skating parties, etc.

How will I receive alerts?
When you register you can choose to receive alerts via text message, phone call (cell or land line) and e-mail. The system is so flexible that you may even choose different ways to receive different types of messages. You may also choose which type of alerts to receive.

What will it cost for me receive messages?
The PTA is paying for this service. The only cost to parents is the charge from their cell phone carrier for the receipt of a text message if you are not on an unlimited text message program. You can choose to receive only voice and/or e-mail alerts and there is no charge for these services.

Can anyone other than parents/guardians receive alerts?
Yes. The decision is yours. You may choose to have grandparents, non-custodial parent, or other child care givers register. We have assigned a unique password to each child. In order to register, a person must have the name and code included in this document. Each registrant will need an unique e-mail address and may choose which type of alerts to receive.

My family does not use text messaging or e-mail or internet. Can we still receive emergency alerts?
Yes. You may receive alerts over a regular land line phone. However, if you do not have a valid e-mail account, you will need assistance with registration. If that is the case, please send a note school asking for assistance and a Bowen staff member will contact you to assist with registration.

I have more than one child at Bowen, do I have to register for each one?
No. Register with the information sent from your youngest child. This will keep your family in the system as long as you have a child at Bowen.

Is my family required to use the DEAN alert system to keep informed?
No. You will have traditional information sources such as radio and television available for closings and emergencies and we will continue to send you our regular newsletters from school. Using this service is your choice and you may opt out at any time. Remember it is designed primarily for instant communication directly to you; and, in the case of emergency, will provide you with information pertinent to the situation effecting your child at Bowen.

How do I register?
You will need a registration code. Send an e-mail to linda.carden@jefferson.kyschools.us with DEAN in the subject line. In the body of the note, include your child's name, teacher and your name. You will receive a reply with registration code and instructions.
