Teacher Note:
For our Veteran’s Day program my third grade class interviewed several veteran guests about their military experiences. There was much sharing and learning happening in the classroom and as a follow-up activity the students made 3-D patriotic sculptures depicting their own personal interpretation of Veterans Day. Students used the red, white, and blue colors of our American flag to design their paper sculptures. The students created missiles, barracks, flags, jets, battleships, memorials, stars and stripes and many colorful patriotic scenes. Their paper art portrayed their newfound respect and understanding of what sacrifices our American Heroes have made for our country.

This respect carried over to other classroom activities. The students showed a deeper respect for our flag when saying The Pledge of Allegiance the following morning which was due largely to our American civics lesson and personal sharing from our veterans.

This was more than a one day event. The students have on-going pen pals with soldiers who are now serving in the military in northern Afghanistan. We communicate with them regularly with e-mail.
