Special Area Teachers

in the PYP:

Young is committed to educating the whole child and providing opportunities for them to experience learning through the multi-intelligences allowing them learn in authentic and interesting ways.

Arts and Humanities

The Arts are integral to the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). They are a powerful mode of communication through which students explore and construct a sense of self and develop an understanding of the world around them. Arts provide students with a wide range of opportunities and means to respond to their experiences and engage with historical, social and cultural perspectives. The students are stimulated to think and to articulate their thoughts in new ways, and through a variety of media and technologies. The PYP recognizes that not all learning can be supported solely through language, and that arts as a medium of inquiry also provide opportunities for learning, communication and expression. Learning about and through arts is fundamental to the development of the whole child, promoting creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and social interactions.

Music

Learning through the arts contributes to the developement of the whole child. Music promotes creativity, critical thinking, and social interactions. The music classroom provides a stimulating environment that gives students hands-on opportunities to explore sound and expression. In Music, students create, compose, listen, appreciate, notate and perform. Music enables students to communicate in a way that goes beyond oral language.

Foreign Language

In PYP schools all students have the opportunity to learn more than one language from at least the age of 7. Every learner benefits from having access to different languages, and, through that access, to different cultures and perspectives. Acquisition of more than one language enriches personal development and helps facilitate international-mindedness.Effective language teaching and learning are social acts, dependent on relationships with others, with context, with the environment, with the world, and with the self. Such learning is relevant, engaging, challenging and significant. Exposure to and experience with languages, with all their richness and diversity, creates an inquisitiveness about life and learning, and a confidence about creating new social interactions.
Language provides a vehicle for learners to engage with the world and, in an IB World School, to relate to,and accept, responsibility for the mission of the IB to “help to create a better and more peaceful world”.

Physical Education

Physical education in a PYP school is more than just student participation in sports and games. Its purpose is to develop a combination of transferable skills promoting physical, intellectual, emotional and social development; to encourage present and future choices that contribute to long-term healthy living; and to understand the cultural significance of physical activities for individuals and communities. In the PYP, there are specific opportunities for learning about movement and through movement in a range of contexts.

Computer Lab

The ever-increasing impact of Information and Communication Technologies(ICT) on teaching and learning is an important consideration in education at all levels. Therefore, in addition to technology in every classroom, students also attend classes in the Computer Lab. Through ICT, there are greater opportunities for interactive communication and exchange of information through global collaboration, authentic learning, expansion of the learning community and empowerment for all learners. ICT in the PYP encompasses the use of a wide range of digital tools, media and learning environments for teaching, learning and assessing. ICT provides opportunities for the transformation of teaching and learning and enables students to investigate, create, communicate, collaborate, organize and be responsible for their own learning and actions. ICT allows students to make connections and reach a deeper understanding of its relevance and applicability to their everyday lives. Through the use of ICT, learners develop and apply strategies for critical and creative thinking, engage in inquiry, make connections, and apply new understandings and skills in different contexts. In this constantly evolving digital age, ICT is progressively becoming a ubiquitous part of a learner’s life at school and beyond: for learning, working, innovating, creating, responding, problem-solving, problem posing, socializing and playing.

Library Media Center

Young's Library Media Center is the hub of the school. Centrally located, all students participate in library classes and have the opportunity of designated open library times. It was recently updated with new titles that expose students to a wide range of literary genres and current resources reflecting different cultures, global topics, and different languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, and Russian). These library materials increase the students' cultural awareness and understanding of the world. The Media Center is committed to promoting respect and cultivating compassion toward diversity while developing a lifelong love of reading and learning.
