Who was Whitney M. Young Jr.?
Whitney Moore Young Jr. (July 31, 1921-March 11, 1971) was born in Lincoln Ridge, Kentucky, in Shelby County. As an American civil rights leader, he is best known for his vital and creative leadership as a past president of the National Urban League. He spent most of his career working to end employment discrimination.


school Our History

Our school building, named in his honor, was dedicated on November 28, 1971.The construction of Young Elementary was made possible through the support of the Louisville citizens who, with a special vote, approved a building fund.

A playtorium, which serves as a combination auditorium/ gymnasium, was built during the 1988-89 school year. A new air conditioning and heating system was installed in the summer of 2005, adding to the latest upgrades, which include new ceilings and lighting and the renovation of the library media center. JCPS and the Young faculty and staff are committed to providing a quality facility and a safe environment for our students.
