Environmental Squad

G0 Green Team

IB Students are asked to think about their rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources on our planet. The Green Team students (3rd graders)take the opportunity to delve deeper into areas of environmental stewardship such as Energy Conservation, Recycling, and Green Spaces. They also apply their knowledge to organize and implement projects around the school and in their community. The Kentucky Green and Healthy Schools, a student-centered program that empowers students and staff to move their school toward becoming safer, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable, is used to guide students through inquiries and assist them in choosing and reflecting on their actions.

Zoo Crew

The Discovery Lab at Young is now ALIVE with lots of critters to help students understand the natural world around them. Students are able to engage with these creatures through observations, inquiries, as well as their care and maintenance. Most animals are based in the Discovery Lab (hermit crabs, gerbil, hamster, finches, anoles, fish) and some visit upon occasion (hissing cockroaches, turtles, and butterflies). Students learn an appreciation for living things, the importance of diversity in ecosystems as well as about the impact man has on the environment.

The Recycling Team

The Recycling Team is a group of students who understand the importance of recycling as a sustainable activity that help keeps a lot of material out of the waste stream. Weekly, students go around the school and collect items from each room's blue recycling bin. These principled team members also ticket those who have too much recycling (that could be reduced) or if they have items in their bins that cannot be recycled. The members take responsibility for teaching our community of learners the importance of recycling and how to decrease our carbon footprint.
