Parents in the PYP:

Parents that have chosen the PYP for their child should know:
- The PYP promotes learning for all students in the school regardless of their cultural background, mother tongue or special educational need, as laid out in Young’s admissions policy.
- Although some of the content included will be unique to any one school, the PYP determines the framework for all schools, and the IB requires that the same standards and practices apply to all IB World Schools.
- The PYP framework requires the development of particular concepts, knowledge, skills and attitudes, and that opportunities for students to take action are considered and planned for.
- The IB Learner Profile is a list of characteristics that are promoted and fostered at Young for the entire community- students, staff and parents. Together they embody what it means to be internationally-minded.
- The PYP is part of the continuum of international education offered by the IB—the approach to teaching and learning in the PYP is an excellent preparation for, but not a prerequisite for, the IB Middle Years Programme or the IB Diploma Programme.
- The PYP curriculum has been developed by highly experienced teachers and school leaders from a variety of school contexts; they contribute a global perspective supported by compelling educational theory and research.
- The teachers plan the program together, providing a coherent education, with expectations of the students that are similar from one teacher to another.
- The PYP promotes good teaching practices through the written curriculum documents, the sharing of ideas among IB World Schools and ongoing professional development. Instruction is inquiry-based and concept driven; students are actively engaged in classroom activities (small group, whole group and individually).
- A documented language policy is available to them.
- A documented assessment policy is available to them.
- Teachers’ collaborative planning ensures a rigorous programme that includes assessment tasks that are specific to what is being taught and allows student learning to be continually supported.
Your participation at school is welcomed. Each year, volunteers must complete Background Check through JCPS. This can be done by completing a form at the school (available in the front office) or online (click here).
Please continue to search our site for school-specific information such as our handbook, dress code, supply lists, etc. For more general information and JCPS forms go to the JCPS Parent Page.
