Angela Van Winkle
Speech/Language Pathologist

Part of the school day, I am a special education teacher so I work with students who have special needs. Working with these students in a collaborative model means that they are in a regular classroom, but receive extra help from me. My goal is to help them achieve success, both academically and socially, in the regular classroom by modifying and adapting the curriculum to the student's needs.

The other part of the day, I work with the school counselor, as the Exceptional Child Education Coordinator(ECE) to assist him with the special education paperwork. I also serve as the chairperson for the School-Based Admissions and Release Committee for students needing speech services. This committee must meet in order for students to receive help from our Speech Pathologist, Ms. Van Winkle.

My job as a Speech/Language Pathologist involves working with the diagnosis and treatment of the disorders of communication. This includes disorders of articulation (speech), fluency(stuttering), voice quality, and the ability to understand what was spoken(receptive language) or respond appropriately to what was heard(expressive language). Students of all ages receive speech therapy, including pre-schoolers to 5th graders. Teachers or parents typically recommend students to be screened for these disorders. An evaluation may then be recommended by me depending on the results of the screening. Once students qualify for services, the amount of time they are served depends on the severity of the disorder and its impact on classroom performance.

My job as the Learning Disabilities Resource teacher is to provide specially designed instruction according to each child's Individual Education Program. Direct, systematic instruction occurs one-on-one and in small groups according to the learning style of the child. Attention enhancing interventions and behavior management strategies are also used.

My job as a Learning and Behavior Disabilities Resource Teacher is to work with students who have a variety of disabilities using the general education curriculum, or modifying it, to meet the child's individual needs. I work to assist the regular classroom teachers to adapt curriculum materials and teaching techniques to meet the needs of students with disabilities. I use various techniques to promote learning. Depending on the disability, my teaching methods can include collaboration in the regular classroom, individualized instruction, problem-solving assignments, and small group work. When students need special accommodations in order to take a test, I make sure that appropriate ones are provided.

Extended School Services

Wilder provides Extended School Services (ESS) to identified students in greatest need of additional support to fill in learning gaps and to aid student success. ESS is scheduled during or before regular school hours at no cost to parents, and as often as funding permits. Students eligible for ESS are notified by the school and parents permission is required for participation. Eligibility questions should be directed to your child's teacher or Wilder's counselor.
