Accelerated Reader (AR)
|
Accelerated Reader is a library media center maintained program which tracks recreational reading in a fun and friendly way. This is only one of many ways teachers track student comprehension at Wheeler.
Students have the opportunity to check out and read a book for which the library media center has an Accelerated Reader quiz. After reading it, they can take the quiz from any computer in the school building. The results are then recorded on into their personal computer record. As children earn 80% or better on their quiz, they work toward climbing to various reading tier levels.

- After students earn 100 points and each 100 points thereafter, they are entitled to a certificate. They are also entitled to an engraved plate depicting their name, points, and date. Morning Telecast
|
Wheeler's World is the daily morning news broadcast.
The newscast is produced by 5th grade students under the direction of Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Dishon. The newscast consists of a news anchor, two co-anchors, a camera person, and a tech person. Each student rotates their position during their tenure to provide an opportunity to learn all the positions of the newscast crew. Students work collaboratively each day to produce the show. The newscast consists of Pledge of Allegiance, thought of the day, word of the day, weather, sports, trivia, birthday announcements, special events in the news and history, daily announcements, special events, and other activities.
Students are selected by teacher referral and stay on the air for a period of one month. The existing team members are responsible for training the new news team. Each crew member must exhibit leadership qualities during their tenure which includes: classroom participation, good grades, excellent behavior, punctuality and attendance, and a positive attitude towards learning.

Literary Creations Club:
Special selected students participate in the club by reading various pieces of literature and meeting weekly in a literacy circle to discuss the work. Birthday Club
|
Wheeler students can celebrate their birthday in a special way by donating a book to the Library Media Center. A special book plate will be placed in the front of the book depicting your child's name and he/she may be the first person to check out the book. In addition, your child will have his/her picture taken for the Birthday Club bulletin board. Students will also attend a birthday party in May!
To join the club, just send in a new hard covered book during your child's birthday month or any time if your child's birthday is during the summer months. Any elementary level book is acceptable. If you need help with selection or purchase of the book, please contact Mrs. Ryan. This is a fun way to help the Library Media Center add new books to the shelves!
