Fall Happenings
Scholastic Book Fairs - (see school calendar for specific dates). The Library Media Center sponsors two Scholastic Book Fairs each year. This gives students and families an opportunity to browse quality titles for their home libraries. The funds raised from these events are used to purchase materials needed for the library media center, including, but not limited to, the upkeep of the Accelerated Reader program.

Children's Book Week - Children's Book Week is a week of fun literature events, lessons and activities. Each year students participate in an act of giving back to the community during this week as their way of showing their thanks for the wonderful books in the library. Past events included:
  • 2003-2004 - Homemade bookmarks donated to the Public library to be handed to patrons.
  • 2004-2005 - Over 40 boxes of books donated from students' home libraries for shelters in our community to help children of tragic situations.
  • 2005-2006 - The students collected much needed money and books for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Literacy Night - The library plays an active role in the Literacy Night program each year. The night focuses on educating parents about the best books and teaching approaches to help their child become avid readers. Since Literacy Night is a family event, the committee offers entertainment and fun activities to children.

Winter Happenings
Cultural Diversity Fun - Polar Express - Kindergarten and First grade students learn about cultural diversity through an interactive program. This annual event is hosted by the library and computer departments.

Holiday Fun - Second through fifth grade students participate in various winter activities as a reward to their great progress in the CHAMPs program. This is hosted by the library, computer, theater arts and physical education departments.

6 Hours of Reading - Students are challenged to read for a total time of 6 hours over the course of several months. Students must record their time on an official form, have the form signed by their guardian, and turn it into the library media center to receive a free ticket to Kentucky Kingdom.

Spring Happenings
Scholastic Bookfair - see librarian for details

Run for the Books - Members of each class are encouraged to read, read, read!!! Students keep track of the number of minutes he/she reads and the class’ progress is marked by the moving of their class horse, corresponding to the number of hours the class reads, along a track. This is a highly exciting annual reading event. The class who reads the most wins a class trophy and bragging rights.

Read Across America Week - Students participate in various activities during the week which include- a party atmosphere celebration, crafts, eating, contests, jeopardy, and reading, reading, reading.

Summer Happenings
Send me a Postcard - Each summer I am interested to hear where students are visiting and reading. Students are encouraged to send postcards to Mrs. Ryan from where they are reading over the summer months. Our address is: Wheeler Elementary School 5700 Cynthia Drive, Louisville, Ky 40291. Last year we received a postcard from India!

Wheeler highly supports the reading programs offered by Jefferson County Public Library and other local businesses who offer various treats and prizes to encourage students to read during the summer months. A letter is sent home from the media center at the end of each school year listing all the fun reading events offered by the community.
