"The Jefferson County Public Schools “The Jefferson County Public School District recognizes the need to serve students coming from environments where English is not the primary language. Through the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, ESL teachers and bilingual associate instructors share with regular classroom teachers the responsibility of educating students with limited English proficiency.” —JCPS ESL Department Wheatley’s ELL Program provides a quality education for all children whose primary language is not English. Our goal is to assist with literacy skills that otherwise would prohibit students from meaningful participation in academic content. Through collaborative instruction in the regular classroom all children will have the opportunity to acquire English literacy skills as well as content knowledge.

Currently there are approximately 100 ELL students enrolled at Wheatley. These students represent 18 countries and territories: Afghanistan, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Brazil, Cuba, El Salvador, Guam, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Russia, Somalia, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
