Computer

Each week, the students visit the computer lab for formal instruction with a certified computer teacher. Students work on such skills as keyboarding, word processing, database, spreadsheets, multimedia presentations, telecommunications, and legal/ethical-use issues. Younger students work with programs that reinforce skills being taught in the classroom. Dunn’s students have consistently scored 98 percent mastery on the Computer Application Skills Assessment (CASA) and rank in the top five of all Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) elementary schools.

Library

Dunn students visit the media center once a week to choose from our vast collection of books. The media center is equipped with 12 networked computers that can be used for Internet access, research, or access to the Accelerated Reader Program. With the district focus on reading, the library media center is the heartbeat of the school. The Every 1 Reads initiative and the Literary Resource Room are part of the library, and materials are ready for collaboration between the classroom teachers and the students.

Physical Education

Dunn is a designated Health Promotion School of Excellence (HPSE). This program emphasizes a comprehensive approach to health and physical education (PE), including physical best testing, nutrition programs, community involvement, and components of practical living. Dunn has a very active PE program. We are known statewide for years of participation in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart Program. We are one of several schools in Jefferson County with a rock-climbing wall. The wall is used to promote physical fitness as well as build confidence and self-esteem in students. A range of activities are taught in PE class–-basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, indoor hockey, etc.
