Reading Programs

Dixie Elementary is a Reading First school. Reading First is a federally funded program designed to ensure that all children learn to read well by the end of the third grade. Students at Dixie receive a core program entitled Rigby Literacy, which provides all students with the five components of literacy necessary to become a successful reader. Rigby is a research based reading program that consists of instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension.

Students are given the opportunity to utilize Leap Frog materials for phonological awareness, phonics, as well as fluency.

The Reading First Assessments are DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) and GRADE (Group Reading Assessment and Diagnostic Evaluation.) These assessments are given three times a year to assist teachers in providing instruction for students.

Our programs focus on ensuring that every child reads on grade level at the end of third grade.
