Attendence

Any child who has been absent from school without valid excuse for three (3) or more days, or tardy without valid excuse on two (2) or more days, is truant. Any child who has been reported as truant three (3) or more times is an habitual truant. Being abesnt for less than half of a school day shall be regarded as being tardy.

Absence/Tardies

Unless your child is truly sick, he or she needs to be at school. Perfect attendance is valued and rewarded at Bates Elementary. Please help us emphasize the importance of "reporting to work" each day. In the event of illness, the following procedure is to be followed:

  1. If a student is going to be absent from school, for any reason, the parent or guardian (not the child) is to call the school office before 9:30 a.m. (502) 485-8208
  2. Requests for homework pickup (after school) must be made by 9:30 a.m. when the absence is called in, so the teacher will have time to prepare the necessary material for pickup. Work may be picked up during afternoon dismissal.
  3. Upon return to school, a signed not of explanation is to be given to the homeroom teacher. Teachers will assist the student in obtaining missed work. It is the student's responsibility to complete assigned work.

Students with excused absences have appropriate time to make up work as outlined in the Jefferson County Uniform Code of Student Conduct.

Releasing Students During School Hours

If a student is to be excused early, the parent must notify the teacher in writing. This will allow the teacher to remind the student to prepare for early dismissal. An authorized adult must sign out students departing prior to regular dismissal. The sign-out log is located at the attendance clerk's desk.

For safety reasons, only adults who have been previously designated as authorized may pick up students prior to dismissal

Students will not be sent off the school grounds without parental permission.

Student will not be released to speak with anyone other than a parent during school hours (with the exception of Child Protective Services, or the police).

It is the responsibility of the parent to keep the school informed of special family arrangements in regard to custody of the child. Parents should not assume that school officials are aware of court orders regarding custody.

For more infomation contact Pam Hall, attendence secretary, 485-8208.
