J. B. Atkinson Academy for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
A University of Louisville Signature Partnership School

School Profile
Success For All, a reading program developed at Johns Hopkins University, is the cornerstone of the academic program at J. B. Atkinson Elementary. All students are afforded a 90-minute uninterrupted reading block each day. Students are placed in groups according to their reading level thereby ensuring success. Individual tutoring is also an integral component of the Success For All program. The staff also focuses on implementing Dimensions of Learning, strategies that foster critical thinking, integration of knowledge, and positive habits of mind. In addition, students are exposed to art, music, technology, physical education and humanities curricula. J. B. Atkinson is a member of the Kentucky Instructional Discipline System (KIDS) initiative, a program that bases its approach to discipline on the premise that students need to be taught the expectations of behavior and actions. Students have the chance to participate in The Junior Beta Club, Extended School Services, and intramural activities such as Quick Recall, basketball, and cheerleading. There is also a Family Resource Center on the campus that addresses the varied needs of the families in the community. Atkinson is also a 21st Century Community School in collaboration with two other neighborhood schools, Western Middle and Shawnee High Schools. The teachers and staff strive to offer the students the highest quality education all within a nurturing, caring environment.
