Since 2005, big changes have been taking place in the way students learn math
and science in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). JCPS was the first district in the country to receive a GE Foundation Developing Futures™ in Education award. This initial grant—$24.5 million over five years—is the largest non-governmental grant ever received by the district. In March of this year, JCPS received an additional $10.5 million grant from the GE Foundation to further the successful math and science initiatives originally funded in 2005.

JCPS is one of six school districts, along with Erie, PA; Cincinnati, OH; Atlanta, GA; Stamford, CT; and New York, NY, to receive support from the GE Foundation. The ultimate goal of the GE Foundation support is to improve students’ achievement in math and science and increase the number of graduates enrolling in college—fostering the leaders of tomorrow.
