The elementary school registration and application period for the 2015-16 school year is November 17, 2014, through June 9, 2015. JCPS elementary schools are grouped into clusters comprised of five to eight schools. A child's elementary cluster is determined by his or her home address, and transportation for that child is provided to all schools within his or her cluster. Most elementary school students choose to attend one of their cluster schools.
Parents must complete an online application to enroll their child in a cluster school. On this application, parents rank each school in their cluster according to their preferences. Our Student Assignment Office then acts accordingly to place the child in a school. Student Assignment keeps siblings together in cluster schools when parents indicate the sibling’s school as their first choice. The district also considers parental choice, space, resides school, diversity of the student body when placing students at schools.
Parents may also choose to apply to one of the district’s magnet schools or magnet programs. Magnet schools and programs have a particular learning focus or learning style. Schools with magnet programs have students who attend because they live in the same cluster as the school and those who live in other clusters but attend because they want to take advantage of the particular learning theme (such as technology) or focus on a specific subject (such environmental studies or health and fitness). An online application is also required for a magnet school or program.
