Hazardous Chemicals

JCPS has had a continuing interest in chemical safety in our schools. Excess, unwanted, old, and dangerous chemicals have been identified and legally disposed of through an environmental contractor. The types of chemicals have been established as well as limits placed on the quantities that may be stored.

Chemical safety training is based on the requirements of the OSHA Hazard Communication Program. MSDS should be available in each school science area. In addition, a Chemical Hygiene Plan detailing safety guidelines is available to the schools.

Special red binders for keeping MSDS and special yellow and black secondary labels are available by calling 485-3698. A red binder containing sheets specific to the chemicals in each work area (such as custodial or science) must be readily accessible in that area. Secondary labels must be completely filled out and placed on containers of chemicals that do not have manufacturer's labels. A Model Plan to guide each school/facility on implementing a HAZCOM program is included on this Web site.
