Shop Responsibilities
Asbestos Program
The Asbestos Management Program is responsible for maintaining and inspecting asbestos containing building material in compliance with AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act).
Carpenter Shop
The carpenter shop is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of doors, floor tile, ceiling tile, shelving, sanding and refinishing of wood floors, and repair of wooden sashes. The carpenter shop also designs, fabricates and installs some cabinets and office counters.
Furniture repair workers are responsible for the repair and refinishing of all furniture that is delivered to the shop. One worker travels to locations as requested to repair furniture that can be completed at the site.
Electric Shop
Electricians are primarily responsible for maintenance, installation and repair of all electrical power systems to include power distribution, panels and switch gear, interior and exterior lighting systems, house phones, master clock systems, emergency and exit lighting and back up generators.
Electronic technicians are responsible for maintenance, installation and repair of all fire alarm and suppression equipment to include annual inspection as required by the State.
Kitchen equipment repair workers are responsible for all maintenance and repair of kitchen equipment in conjunction with the School and Community Nutrition Services. This included an extensive preventative maintenance program.
Grounds/Tractor Shop
The grounds shop is responsible for landscaping, mowing, turf maintenance, tree maintenance/removal, fencing, concrete maintenance and construction, paving repair, flag pole repair/relocation, waste water treatment plants, snow removal, moving of heavy equipment (pianos, kilns, etc.), installation of traffic signs, mulch, assisting in outside classrooms and wetlands and drainage.
Lock/Metal/Hardware Shops
Locksmiths install, maintain and repair all locks within the district to include classroom, desk, cabinet locks, panic hardware and door closures. At present, the district is working toward installing the Best A4 key system in all facilities.
Metal Shop is responsible for sheet metal work, handrails, windows (latch repairs), approved Building Modifications. This includes repairs to broken backboards-glass with metal trim, chin up bars, basketball goal cables, bleachers that are off track or will not pull out, lockers, metal shelving, reset manhole covers, and loose aluminum siding.
Paint/Glass Shop
The paint/glass shop is comprised of painter/glaziers, plasterers and helpers.
Shade repair workers are responsible for repairing all window shades, stage curtains, projection screens and stage rigging in the district. In the summer, an extensive preventative maintenance program is followed, so that all shades in high schools are checked and repaired. It normally takes four (4) work days at each high school.
They are responsible for the repair/replacement of broken windows, the painting of small areas and touch-up painting until a complete interior/exterior painting of a building is scheduled, the repair of plaster walls, the striping of parking lots and playgrounds, removal of graffiti, and the fabrication of name plates, room numbers and small signs. This shop works on second shift while school is in sesion.
Paint Projects Shop
The major purpose of this shop is total repainting, both interior and exterior of schools on a fixed time schedule. Presently each school is scheduled for a complete painting on a 10-12 year rotation. Paint Projects is also responsible for the restriping, painting of logos, etc. on wooden gym floors (88) on a regular schedule as well as the screen discing and resealing on a annual basis. All paint project employees are temporary employees in maintenance, but are either fulltime employees in other areas of the school system or are retired from the school system. This shop works on second shift while school is in sesion.
Plumbing Shop
Plumbers are responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of all aspects of plumbing to include but not limited to the repair of faucets, water coolers and fountains, drainage and vent lines, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, treatment plants, lift stations, sprinkler systems, fire hydrants, siamese connections for fire departments, water mains - domestic and fire, back flow valves, and booster heaters.
Fire extinguisher worker is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of all fire extinguishers to include the annual test, recharge and tag as required by the State.
Renovation Shop
Renovation shop is comprised of four (4) trades, carpenters, electricians, masons and plumbers. They complete all renovation projects as requested by school personnel, facility planning and the space utilization committee. Their work force construct and install marquee signs, repair/replace ceramic and quarry tile, upgrade ceiling and lights when determined appropriate, responsible for the formation of the preventative maintenance program in replacing/installing valves to assist with maintenance of water lines.
Roof Shop
The roof shop is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all roofs in the district to include but not limited to gravel and tar, pitch, shingle and metal roofs, the fabrication and installation of down spouts and gutters.
Special Projects Shop
Special Projects Shop assists the Renovation and Preventative Maintenance Shops , as well as addressing any routine work orders that need to be handled during second shift to avoid disruptions to the schools. They also address any emergencies that are called in during second shift. This shop works on second shift while school is in sesion.
