Welcome to JCPS Arts and Humanities

Melisa Gano, Specialist

The Arts and Humanities curriculum in JCPS includes the National Standards in the Arts and follows the Kentucky Program of Studies. The arts are defined as creating, performing, and responding to dance, music, theatre, and the visal arts. For purpose of the Kentucky Core Content Test and the JCPS curriculum, the humanities has been defined as the beliefs, thoughts, and traditions of humankind as reflected in history, religion, dance, music, theatre, the visuals arts, and literature. The study of these subjects promotes an understanding of the connections among the arts and their historical and cultural contexts and foster an examination of these common elements.

There are many opportunities for JCPS students to create and perform in the arts: The National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards; the PTA Reflections program; The Kentucky Derby Festival; All-County Band, Orchestra, and Chorus; and the KAEA and KMEA All-State Competitions. Besides these district, state, and national competitions, individual schools also have many wonderful art activities. Consult the web sites for each school to see the programs.
