The History of Blackacre was made possible by Judge and Mrs. Macauley Smith, whose love of the land and its history and whose generous donations of time and energy have made the Preserve possible.
The evolving story of Blackacre State Nature Preserve draws from research, interviews, and photographs compiled by Sam Thomas and information assembled by Joellen Tyler Johnston and Jefferson County government. This document is the result of a group writing project, initially undertaken by Doug Stern, Donna Neary, and Monica Henderson. The project coordinator, director, and editor was Dr. David Wicks of the Jefferson County Public Schools Center for Environmental Education.
Numerous people spent time editing, revising, and organizing the initial document. They include the following:
Sam Lord Katherine Smith Joellen Tyler Johnston Fife Wicks Joyce Bender Laura Clifford Barbara Schultz Kathy Wigginton Pat Futch Meryl Becker Prezocki Ann Rosa Holly Nolan Linda Peden Bryan Thompson Donna Griffin Kandris Wunderlich Ellisa Earley Sam Thomas Art Tafel Caroline Pinné
Final design, editing, and printing of the original document were done by the Jefferson County Public Schools Materials Production Department.
